There is a technical language associated with website design and web development and most of it sounds like gibberish to the untutored ear.
It's worth bearing in mind that the internet was invented by hard wired scientists who developed their own communication system for sharing their knowledge. Bravo and thank you to them. We are very grateful to the boys in white coats as their skills have enabled us to shop, research, play games and communicate with each other around the world. But they have left us with a legacy of a secret language which at times seems impossible to comprehend.
Below is a selection of some terms you might need to know.
Ad Words
AdWords is Google's flagship advertising product and main source of revenue ($16.4 billion in 2007). AdWords offers pay-per-click (PPC) advertising, and targeted advertising for both text and banner adverts. Some website developers might suggest you try Ad Words and in some cases it is worth trying. We aim to ensure your site reaches your target audience without having to pay for advertising. We do this through carefully thought out and well implemented optimisation techniques (see SEO below)
Alt Text (or Alternative Text)
Alternative Text is the title of an image. For internet users who have some sight impairment Alt Text is a vital element of a website. It enables special software to inform the user exactly what the image is depicting. There are other uses for Alt Text but unless you have a particular interest in search engine optimisation you can move on...
Browser
A program for looking at websites. You may already be familiar with Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari and Opera.
Call to Action
An element on a web page (which may be just text or text within an image, icon or button) instructing visitors to perform a certain action, e.g. BUY NOW or CALL US.
CMS Websites (Content Management System)
A website which offers a content management system allows a website owner to add their own text, images, data, etc to the site without having to understand how to use html, xhtml, javascript, etc. You don't have to be an expert - simply a good basic knowledge of word processing and file management will be enough. Sometimes it is useful to know about image editing - but if not, a good designer can provide images for you.
Data Stick (or Memory Sticks or Portable Flash Drives)
These small portable sticks can store information, data, images, etc and can be used on any lap top or PC.
Domain Name
The address of your website (e.g. www.elizabethwalsh.net) will need to be purchased and the cost will depend on how valuable the name would be to other businesses. Expect to pay in the region of £10 for a renewable two year period of ownership. Your domain name doesn't have to be the same as your company name so don't despair if your company name or your own name is unavailable.
Hosting Company
A web hosting service allows individuals and organizations to make their website accessible via the world wide web. Web hosts are companies that provide space on a server they own for use by their clients as well as providing connection to the internet. Elizabeth Walsh will provide a hosting service free of charge for the first year unless you specifically choose to arrange your own hosting. You can transfer your web site to another hosting service at any time.
Key Words
The term "keyword" refers to the terms or phrases submitted to search engines such as Google. For example, a search of the phrase "women in property in Monmouth" in Google UK will reveal a set of search engine results that relate to the specified topic. In this case you may find 'paid for' sponsored links highlighted in a peach coloured box (sponsored links frequently come and go) and below that currently appears seven naturally high ranking websites linking to websites Elizabeth has designed'. This is an example of good search engine optimisation.
Meta Tags
These are hidden, specific and pertinent words written into your site. You won't be able to see them as they are lodged into the background code. There are two schools of thought about meta tags - one is 'use them' and the other is 'you don't need to use them'. Whilst the jury is still out on the subject of meta tags (no-one seems to know the definitive answer) Elizabeth Walsh always includes meta tags, unless our clients specifically ask us not to do so.
Page Rank
This refers to the position your site has on the pages of search engines e.g. Google, Yahoo, etc. A naturally high ranking position on the front page of Google or Yahoo is what all good website developers aim to achieve for their clients. It usually takes anywhere between one to twelve weeks to reach a high slot and, of course, it all depends on what key words people use.
Search Engine Optimisation - SEO
Search Engine Optimisation is a crucial element of creating websites so that the sites will quickly and effectively achieve a high front page ranking in Search Engines such as Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc. Without good SEO your website will gather dust at the far outer reaches of Google, Yahoo, etc. Therefore your target audience will not find your site unless existing and potential customers can remember your website address. When searching for someone to build your website you should check that they have a full knowledge of optimisation techniques. SEO is the golden key to successful online presence. Elizabeth Walsh is a proven expert at search engine optimisation.
Target Audience
The people you want to have as customers, supporters or readers.
Web Site Address (also known as URL)
Your website address will always be prefixed with www. and suffixed with one of the following - .co.uk .com .net .biz, etc. Ask us for advice on which suffix is best (or available) for your web address.
If you come across any other terms you are unsure of please call and Elizabeth will do her best to help.
